Imagine an internship where you: 

  • Contribute to the protection of public health and the environment
  • Conduct field inspections, sewer sampling, flow monitoring and manhole locates
  • Learn about project management including cost estimating, budget and schedule for large construction and maintenance projects
  • Create Web sites and troubleshoot information technology (IT) issues
  • Work on Green Building and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (L.E.E.D) projects
  • Learn Geographical Information System (GIS) databases and map locales
  • Participate in pump replacement data collection and support
  • Present your individual or team project to wastewater staff and peers

See yourself in one of these internships:

  • Manhole inspectionFlow Monitoring: Provide field support for sewer inspections, locate manholes, take liquid samples and conduct testing and analysis. You learn basic hydraulics, how corrosion works and get an understanding of the conveyance system.
  • GIS: Link GIS information of sewer system facilities and scanned engineering drawings; learn field verification, conduct quality assurance and control, and review spatial components of existing data. Upon completion of the project, users will be able to go to the Internet, click on a map, and have the choice of photo, drawing, attribute and other linked information.
  • Communications: Develop a staff handbook, assist with the development of other publications, help conduct staff survey, website development, graphics design and planning events. This intern will be working with professional media relations staff.
  • Measuring flowProject Management: Learn all aspects of project management including developing project scopes, planning, design, coordinating with other King County personnel, and the permitting process. Become familiar with relevant regulations, coordinating drawings and specifications, budget and scheduling.
  • Asset Management: Gain hands-on experience developing, designing, and implementing business systems and processes that increase efficiency and cost savings in maintenance and operations. Engage in fieldwork, planning, meetings, and work with IT customers to develop key user requirements.
  • At computerProject Control and Construction Management: Assist with project control and/or project managers in support of the WTD Major Capital Program. Assignments will deal with project control functions including cost, schedule, budget and contract administration. Field work at contruction sites provide hands-on experience.
  • Brightwater Mitigation: Assist the Brightwater Pollution Control Officer in support of the Brightwater Treatment Plant construction; interpret engineering standards, drawings, use project management principles, review submittals for compliance and organize change orders.
