U.S. Green Bulding Council
"The Council is the nation's foremost coalition of leaders from across the building industry working to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable, and healthy places to live and work." As a member, King County employees have access to a clearinghouse of green building-related information on emerging trends, policies, and products, including product databases, case studies, staff papers, directories, and other resources. Downloadable resources in the member's only area include the Sustainable Building Manual which includes sections on local governments, examples, material specifications, and LEEDT rating system resources. The member's products and services page has many links to relevant Web sites for information. King County employees may contact The Research Center or Theresa Koppang for the password.

Other Recommended Green Building Publications
These materials are recommended by King County staff, but are not currently available in the Techical Document and Research Center.
American Institute of Architects. Environmental Resource Guide
An extensive volume of in-depth life-cycle analysis reports on a wide
variety of building components. Reports present information both by material
and by application, including life-cycle flow charts and tables listing
environmental stressors by phase (e.g. material acquisition and preparation;
manufacturing and fabrication; construction, use and maintenance; recycling,
reuse or disposal.) Also includes case studies of several green buildings.
The Architectural Resource Guide
The Architectural Resource Guide (ARG) helps specifiers and purchasers
make more ecological and resource-efficient decisions with sustainable,
less polluting, local and recycled building products. It is organized
by the Construction Specifications Institute numbering system which roughly
follows the standard sequence of building. Each division offers an introduction
on green building practices followed by database listings of materials,
manufacturers, distributors and comments. There is also a recommended
reading list. It is available at http://www.adpsr-norcal.org/menu/ResourceGuide/resourceguide.html
either as a CD-ROM or in paperback for $35.00 (both for $50).
Designing Low-Energy Buildings with Energy-10: Passive Solar Strategies and Energy-10 Software
Energy-10 integrates daylighting, passive solar heating, and low energy
cooling strategies with energy efficient envelope design and mechanical
equipment, allowing detailed simulation and performance analysis. This
software brings energy issues into all phases of design and is ideal for
schools, libraries, offices, and residential buildings.
Available from the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council at www.sbicouncil.org
for $250.00.
Efficient Wood Use in Residential Construction: A Practical Guide to Saving Wood, Money, and Forests
The online excerpts of this 1998 NRDC handbook summarize the advantages
of several wood-efficient approaches to design, material selection, and
construction for residential applications, and describe the extensive
practical and resource information for builders, architects, engineers,
developers, lenders, and insurers provided in the print version. To order
a print copy of the full handbook, see the publications list at http://www.nrdc.org/publications/default.asp
(under the category 'Parks, Forests, and Wildlands').
Green Building Materials: A Guide to Product Selection and Specification
A reference guide that has a section on ecological issues, an explanation
of how the building procurement process works, and detailed sample language
that can be adapted to real projects. Especially strong in the realm of
contract documents and specs. Available online at www.wiley.com
for $75.00.
Handbook of Water Use and Conservation: Homes, Landscapes, Businesses,
Industries, and Farms, Amy Vickers 2001 Hardcover.
More than a handbook, this book is an encyclopedia of water conservation
methods and equipment in buildings, landscapes, and beyond. In addition
to technologies, there is a focus on the strategies needed to design
policies and programs to achieve water conservation goals. It is geared
towards planners, engineers, architects, consultants, policymakers, code
and regulatory officials, builders, landscape designers, irrigators, academicians,
and conservationists.

The HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design
Editors: Sandra F. Mendler, AIA and William Odell, AIA 2000 Hardcover.
This comprehensive guide aims to help architects, engineers, planners,
interior designers, and landscape architects integrate sustainable design
strategies into their work. Featuring twenty-four case studies of a variety
of international HOK projects, it shows how sustainable design thinking can improve projects within the
conventional constraints of budget, schedule, and market demand. It provides
practical guidelines that enhance real projects, including urban planning,
site design, buildings, interiors, and renovations. Available from www.wiley.com
