Fairwood Interceptor Sewer now complete

The King County Wastewater Treatment Division has been working in the Fairwood neighborhood for several years to improve the community's sewer system and protect public health and the environment. To complete the final phase of work, King County has built new pipes to connect portions of pipe laid earlier in the project.

A new all-gravity pipeline called the Fairwood Interceptor (located outside the Madsen Creek ravine) now directs wastewater to the existing Cedar River Water and Sewer District pipelines (see map). In accordance with community preference, the new, deep gravity interceptor avoids the need to build a sewage pump station in Fairwood.

Work Completed: This project was constructed in phases to reduce disruption to the community.

  • During Phases 1 and 2A, the county laid a new pipe underneath the Madsen Creek between the Bonneville Power Administration right-of-way near 140th Avenue Southeast and Fairwood Elementary School. The county also increased the capacity of several existing pipelines (see map).
  • The final phase (Phase 2B) of construction began in summer 2005 and has "connected the dots" of earlier phases. The final phase also consisted of restoring roads, sidewalks and public rights-of-way that were disturbed by the earlier construction work.
