Summary

This page presents the final Salmon Habitat Plan for the Green/Duwamish and Central Puget Sound Watershed (WRIA 9). The Salmon Habitat Plan lists science-based projects, programs, and policies to protect and restore aquatic ecosystem health and salmon habitat in the Green/Duwamish and Central Puget Sound Watershed over the next 10 years.

This Plan is the local habitat-related chapter of the Puget Sound Salmon Recovery Plan.

You can download the Habitat Plan from this page.

Approval of the Habitat Plan

The Plan was approved by the citizen-stakeholder Steering Committee on July 14, 2005. Download the motion approving the Habitat Plan (Adobe Acrobat 11 KB).

The Habitat Plan was approved by the watershed Forum of local governments on September 21, 2005. Download the news release (Adobe Acrobat 51 KB).

The Plan took effect on December 5, 2005. All 17 local governments in the watershed had ratified the Plan by January 2006.

The Salmon Habitat Plan is the fourth and final product of the watershed habitat planning process for salmon recovery in the Green/Duwamish and Central Puget Sound Watershed.

The Habitat Plan files on this page are the product of an extensive planning process. Years of scientific work led to the creation of the draft March 2005 Habitat Plan, which was released on March 10, 2005. Following a 45-day public comment period, the citizen-stakeholder Steering Committee revised the draft during April - June.

The final version of the Plan on this page was released on August 10, 2005.

Purpose of the Habitat Plan

The overall goal of the Habitat Plan is:

To protect, rehabilitate and enhance habitat to support viable salmonid populations in response the Endangered Species Act listing of Chinook salmon and bull trout using an ecosystem approach. This approach will also benefit other non-listed aquatic species.

Scientific Basis of the Habitat Plan

The scientific basis for the Habitat Plan is the Strategic Assessment.

Implementing the Habitat Plan

Work to implement the recommendations of the plan is under way. The Steering Committee has adopted and periodically updated a:

Three-Year Prioritization of Implementation of Salmon Habitat Plan: Three Year Prioritization (Updated April 12, 2007)(MS Excel file 42 KB)

Implementation is occurring now in terms of:

  • Constructing restoration projects such as North Wind's Weir (Project Duw-10, page 7-93),
  • Seeking grant funding for projects such as additional shallow water habitat creation in the Duwamish (Project Duw-7, page 7-90), and
  • Implementation of programs by cities and King County to improve the quality of stormwater.

Progress in implementing recommendations of the Habitat Plan is guided by the Implementation Management Plan (Adobe Acrobat 1.2 MB) drafted in late 2006.

Also assisting with implementation is the Implementation Technical Committee.
