Lower Newaukum Creek Restoration
Project Description
- Located in the Middle Green River Subwatershed at the confluence of Newaukum Creek and the Green River
- Project is project MG-8 in the 2005 Salmon Habitat Plan (page 7-40)
- Project will restore channel, floodplain, and riparian (streamside) conditions in the lower 1,800 feet of Newaukum Creek
- Includes restoring a historic meander, setting back a berm and naturalizing the restored floodplain area, placing large woody debris jams, and replanting banks
Partners and Funding
- Led by King County with the support of the WRIA 9 Forum
- $788,581 funded by SRFB (fifth round), $75,000 from King County, and $75,000 from King Conservation District
- Funding will cover completion of project design, permitting, construction, monitoring, and maintenance

Importance for Salmon
- Newaukum Creek is an important spawning area, with approximately 16% of the naturally spawning adult Chinook that enter the Green/Duwamish Watershed
- Newaukum Creek provides important spawning, rearing, and migration habitat for Chinook, coho, steelhead, and cutthroat
- This project will help maintain the diversity of spawning areas in the watershed, which helps protect the population from natural hazards and human impacts
