News Release
King County starts downtown Renton sewer improvement project

King County will soon begin construction of a large sewer pipeline in downtown Renton that will restore lost pipeline capacity that resulted from the 1965 earthquake. The pipe will be part of the Eastside Interceptor that carries sewage from Eastside communities to the South Treatment Plant in Renton. Working in partnership with the City of Renton, needed water and stormwater utility improvements have been incorporated into the project as an efficiency measure.

The county has worked closely with the City of Renton and residents in the immediate construction area to reduce the negative impacts of noise, vibrations, truck traffic and street closures during the 10-month construction project. An underground tunneling machine will be used that will reduce the cost of construction and disruption to residents compared to the open trench technique.

Next week, construction begins on the access pits for the tunneling machine. The first activity will be the installation of large metal sheets that will support the access pit walls. The three access pits will be located at the intersections of Morris Avenue South and Houser Way South, Morris Avenue South and South 7th Street, and Houser Way South and Burnett Avenue South. Additional work will be done at the intersection of South Seventh Street and Morris Avenue South to relocate a stormwater pipe prior to installing the sheet piles. Excavation of the access pits will take place in a couple of months, when the tunneling equipment is ready to start.

During construction, the streets around the three tunneling access pits will be temporarily closed at different times. Additional street closures will take place later in the project, and more detailed information will be available at that time.

These activities will generate noise and vibrations near the construction sites. Parking and traffic flow near the construction sites will be temporarily restricted, and trucks will make trips to the access pit sites to deliver materials.

Large equipment, including cranes, drills, and equipment to load and unload trucks, will be operating during these activities. King County encourages residents to contact the project contact line at (206) 205-9283 with any questions and concerns about the construction activities.

Once work begins, construction updates will be posted on the King County Wastewater Division Web site at: http://dnr.metrokc.gov/wtd.
