Heating
KSC is served by two "Mammoth" HVAC units located on the roof of the building. Mammoth units are high efficiency modular units that contain all HVAC components –supply and relief fans, direct expansion cooling units and coils, and the cooling tower in one piece of equipment. This design has several advantages over more traditional air handling equipment installations, eliminating remote chillers, chill water pumps and related plumbing. The cooling tower is located in the same unit, reducing energy consumption normally spent on pumping long distances or pumping against a high head pressure. The modular, rooftop design also reduces maintenance costs associated with traditional systems located in a building’s interior.

The supply fans are controlled by variable frequency drives (VFD) which maintain design air flow at all times and achieve substantial energy savings by using the minimum required energy to run fans at optimum rates. The same VFD controls the relief fans and also results in high efficiency by maintaining the correct building pressures.

Series variable air volume (VAV) boxes are used to distribute conditioned air to tenant spaces at KSC. These series boxes are installed with high efficiency motors with variable speed controls on each box. The ECM motor controls on the VAV boxes are infinitely adjustable for airflow quantities. Additional savings come from the ability to precisely adjust the fan speed according to the design airflow and high efficiency filters on the VAV boxes.
