King County made every effort to include re-used products throughout the building. Left over paint was gathered, tiles made of recycled glass were purchased, and carpet normally landfilled was cleaned and re-dyed. When staff first moved in, fewer complained about the new building smells as volatile organic compounds and toxic carpet adhesive were avoided. Fewer health complaints meant less sick time. The use of recycled tile products resulted in less use of raw materials and reduced landfill waste.

Carpet
New recycling technology made it feasible for King County to re-use carpet formerly used by the Coca-Cola Company in Atlanta, GA. Rather than install new carpet, Coca-Cola carpet tiles were cleaned, refurbished and re-dyed with a new pattern, and are now installed in the King Street Center. By using this product, King County saved 32,000 square yards of carpet, equivalent to 320,000 pounds or 160 tons from landfills. The renewed carpet tile will last at least 7-10 years and is capable of being renewed again with a new pattern. The carpet meets WA State standards for indoor air quality testing (no offgassing) and uses zero VOC content, as well water based resealable carpet adhesive
Benefits: Decreased use of raw materials and reduced landfill waste.
