Wate Prevention
To promote the sustainability ethic among KSC employees, the Green Works Business Assistance Program and Wright Runstad Property Management developed an Employee Education Program to promote reusing and recycling office supplies.

Program highlights:
  • King Street Center has a recycling rate of 60 percent (as of January, 2002). This is the highest documented recycling rate of any King County government facility.

  • In 2001, 235,070 pounds of recyclables were collected at King Street Center. King Street Center is one of the few office buildings in Seattle where plastic bottles and small batteries are collected for recycling, in addition to the standard recyclables such as paper, glass bottles and aluminum cans.

  • Numerous office supplies exchange areas are set up throughout the building. In 2001, more than 1,100 pounds of binders, folders and other supplies were reused through these exchanges, for an estimated annual savings of $2,600.

  • About 220 pounds of polystyrene packing materials (peanuts and solid blocks) were collected at King Street Center in 2001. These are given to a nearby shipping business, which reuses them.· Kitchens in King Street Center all have dishwashers, which encourages the use of durable dishes.

  • A worm bin to compost food waste from some of the kitchens was recently set up on the loading dock.

  • “Clean commuting” is encouraged with an 80-space bike room and showers.
