Contact: Free trees to help South County watershed
Carolyn Duncan, DNR, 206-296-8304
Get a free tree and learn about the benefits of planting trees and shrubs native to our region at an open house Saturday, November 7, at Ranniger’s Kent Nursery. That is the offer made to citizens of the Green/Duwamish watershed by a public/private partnership including Ranniger’s and the Green/Duwamish Restoration 2000 program, coordinated by staff from the King County Water and Land Resources Division.
The watershed, which feeds the Green and Duwamish Rivers, includes most of the area of South King County and has been dramatically changed by human activities during the last century. Among the most significant changes is the loss of native vegetation along our important water resource areas. By encouraging residents to replace some of this native vegetation the organization aims to provide the far-reaching benefits of improved water quality for people and wildlife, even in urban areas. It also will give fish and animals new places to feed and rest.
Complimentary native seedling trees, as well as information on a wide spectrum of native plants and consultation with a landscape architect will be featured at the open house this Saturday, November 7, at Ranniger’s Kent Nursery, 11615 S.E. 240th, Kent, Washington, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. For more information call Linda Hanson, Green/Duwamish Watershed Steward, (206) 296-8052 or Ranniger’s Kent Nursery (253) 854-1767.
