King County to assume operation of Vashon Island wastewater treatment plant King County’s Wastewater Treatment Division will assume operation of Vashon Island’s wastewater treatment plant on November 1, 1999 in an effort to improve environmental and public health protection. The Vashon Sewer District invited King County to assume operations to provide additional assistance with the complex financial and technical aspects of running the plant. The increased services will help the district meet the state Department of Ecology’s regulatory requirements, as well as community health needs. King County is assuming operation of the wastewater treatment plant through a partnership with the Vashon Sewer District. This effort is also being coordinated with the state Department of Ecology. The Vashon Sewer District has run the plant since 1955, with facility upgrades taking place in 1976 and in the early 90s. "We’re pleased to be able to join with the Vashon Sewer District and the Department of Ecology in this partnership to take what actions we can to ensure the health of future Vashon residents as well as the island itself," said King County Executive Ron Sims. "The county will take immediate steps to improve operation of the existing plant, and will construct new treatment facilities following the normal planning and public process. "The people of Vashon will benefit from increased personnel and resources to devote to supporting the existing facility and in making future improvements," said Ron Kohler, Off-site Supervisor for King County’s Wastewater Treatment Division.
