Help Shape Salmon Recovery

You are invited to help local governments develop a plan to help save Puget Sound chinook salmon that migrate through Lake Washington and the Cedar and Sammamish rivers and their tributaries. Chinook will soon be listed for protection under the Endangered Species Act, and local governments want to hear your ideas and thoughts about salmon recovery. Seven meetings will be held between January 20 and February 16 in Redmond, Bellevue, Issaquah, Bothell, Maple Valley, Seattle, and Everett.

The public meetings will include a briefing on salmon recovery work done so far, background on the Endangered Species Act and a report on scientific research. Residents of the area are invited to give their opinions about what they think should be the focus of salmon recovery and the most critical issues in this effort.

The federal government is expected to list chinook salmon as 'threatened' under the federal ESA in March. It will then determine which activities harm the fish and how those activities should be restricted. If local governments don't develop a recovery plan that is acceptable, the federal government could place restrictions on local land and water use.

The chinook salmon public meetings are co-sponsored by: King County, City of Seattle, City of Bellevue, Snohomish County, Sustainable Fisheries Foundation, City of Redmond, City of Issaquah, Save Lake Sammamish, City of Woodinville, City of Bothell, Cedar River Council, Adopt-A-Stream, Water Tenders.
