News Release
Volunteer Interpreters Needed for Cedar River Salmon Journey

Interested in fish? Good with people? Sign up to be a volunteer naturalist on the Cedar River this fall. Naturalists will receive 20 hours of training from fish and watershed experts and in return spend two or three Saturdays making riverside presentations to the public about the Cedar River and its sockeye salmon run. Sponsors of the program, now in its third year, include the Seattle Aquarium, King County Park System, King County Water and Land Resources, Seattle Public Utilities (Cedar River Watershed) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Chittenden Locks).

We are looking for volunteers to commit to a 20-hour training and 2-3 fall Saturdays of work as naturalists at one of several sites on the Cedar River. The training will prepare volunteers to talk about the human and natural history of the Cedar River, the Cedar's sockeye salmon and their life cycle and habitat requirements, other Cedar River wildlife, human impacts on salmon and what we can do to protect salmon.

Training is scheduled for three weekday evenings, September 20 and 27 and October 4, and two Saturdays, September 23 and October 7, and will feature experts in each of the areas. Most of the training will be held in the Renton area, with at least one at the Seattle Aquarium.

Once trained, volunteers will commit to work at one of four sites on the Cedar: Landsburg, Cavanaugh Pond, Riverview Park and the Renton Library -- for two or three of the four "on duty" days: October 14, 21 and 28 and November 4.

We will hold an orientation for interested volunteers on Wednesday evening, August 23, at which you can learn about the program's purpose, schedule and requirements. Interested volunteers may fill out an application after that orientation and will be notified by early September; we'll probably need 30 volunteers for this fall's program.

Reasonable accommodations will be provided to people with disabilities upon advance request by calling 1-800-833-6388 (TTY).

Interested? Call Polly Freeman at (206) 296-8359 or email her at polly.freeman@kingcounty.gov with your contact information, to sign up for the orientation, or to ask any questions.
