News Release King County's Houghton Transfer Station on Northeast 60th Street in Kirkland will be under construction September 11 through mid-November 2000. Improvements will be made to the station's scalehouse foundation and to the sewer and storm drain systems. The Houghton Transfer Station is the county's busiest transfer station, receiving over 175,000 tons of garbage a year. This construction project will significantly disrupt and delay normal operations at the station and long waits are expected. The recycling drop off area will be closed during the entire project and garbage disposal fees for the public will be assessed by the cubic yard, not by weight. In addition, public access to the station will be limited to weekends only during the final two weeks of the project. This project will not affect curbside garbage or recycling pickup services. The County is asking customers who haul their own garbage and recyclables to use the Factoria Transfer Station at 13800 S.E. 32nd St. in Bellevue or the First Northeast Transfer Station at 2300 N. 165th St. in Shoreline to avoid expected delays. Residents and businesses that do not already subscribe to curbside garbage and recyclables collection can contact King County Solid Waste about how to sign up. For more information, contact the King County Solid Waste Division information line at (206) 296-4466 or 1-800-833-6388 (TTY Relay) or visit the County's Web site at http://dnr.metrokc.gov/swd.
