News Release King County residents can bring their old tires, car batteries, reusable household appliances and other hard-to-recycle items to a special recycling event on Saturday, September 9 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Northwood Junior High School in East Renton. Recycle old car, truck or marine vessel batteries. Regular household batteries will not be accepted. Styrofoam, in "peanut" form only, will be accepted if completely secured in a closed box or bag. Up to six car or motorcycle tires, with a maximum inner-diameter of 18.5 inches and rims removed, can be turned in. Scrap metal such as car parts, lawnmowers and bicycles will be accepted, after all fluids and tires have been removed. Working appliances and household items such as furniture, toys, books, sporting equipment, area rugs, beds, stain-free mattresses, and clothing (with "garage sale" stickers removed) will be accepted for charity, if in good working condition and undamaged, for resale in thrift shops. Materials such as concrete, rock, brick, and asphalt can be turned in (size limit 2 cubic feet). Household sinks and toilets can be recycled for a handling fee of $5. Please remove all plastic and metals. Household refrigerators and freezers can be recycled for a handling fee of $15 to pay for the safe disposal of CFC coolants. Commercial units will not be accepted. The county can not accept bulky wood waste, leaves, grass, yard waste, painted or treated wood, polycoated paper board, # 6 plastics, broken furniture, broken televisions or appliances, carpet, non-reusable rugs, garbage, Styrofoam blocks and frames, demolition debris or hazardous wastes such as paints, thinners or motor oils. Northwood Junior High School is located at 17007 SE 184th Street, just east of SE Petrovitsky Rd. The site is located southeast of Petrovitsky Park, between Lake Youngs and Lake Desire.
