Compost Happens
County sells 3,000 bins in one day

Environmental-minded folks enthusiastically lined up in Bellevue, Auburn and Kenmore last Saturday to purchase over 3,000 compost bins at a one-day sale sponsored by King County. The yard waste compost bin, called Earth Machine, was reduced to $25 for the sale, a significant discount off its normal retail price of $80.

The King County Solid Waste Division sponsored the sale to promote the environmental benefits of composting such as reducing garbage and improving soil so it needs less water, fertilizers and pest-controlling chemicals. The county receives inquiries daily from residents wanting to know about composting and where they can buy various types of bins.

"We know there's a strong interest in composting yard waste but the excellent turnout was proof," said Gerty Coville of the King County Solid Waste Division. "Our goal was to sell 2,450 bins and our final total was 3,248."

A recent county study found that 32% of the people surveyed bring their yard waste to transfer stations or landfills. In 1999 King County transfer stations took in an estimated 68,000 tons of yard waste.

"Don't pay to dispose of the yard waste and then buy compost next spring," said Master Recycler Composter, Paul Martin, who attended the sale. "Do it all in your own backyard! Use the renewable resource of the humus created by composting yard waste and put its nutrition back into your garden's soil!"

Information about composting resources and training go to the King County Solid Waste Division Web site at http://dnr.metrokc.gov/swd/ or call (206) 296-4466. Reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities will be provided upon request.
