News Release
Water quality high at Hidden Lake

Puget Sound water quality is high in the area of a sewage spill in the Shoreline area Monday. Water quality tests show there was no risk to public health because of equipment failure at King County’s Hidden Lake Pump Station Monday. Water samples were taken near the pump station emergency outfall, and as a precaution, at Richmond Beach and Carkeek Park.

King County is taking several steps to ensure smooth operation of the Hidden Lake Pump station after two power-related equipment failures within two weeks. Monday’s failure occurred after a series of power bumps over a period of several hours caused failure of the Automatic Transfer Switch. The Automatic Transfer Switch controls the power flow to the pump station from its main power line or from a generator when power is lost.

King County has replaced wiring and the pump station’s Automatic Transfer Switch and looking at other short-term measures to help prevent future equipment problems at Hidden Lake. Additionally, the county is looking to accelerate planned improvements to the aging pump station that was built in the mid-1960.
