News Release
Calling all Snoqualmie-area volunteers to Carnation

Help restore habitat at Tolt-MacDonald Park or Chinook Bend

King County is seeking a few hours of your time for a volunteer project to help restore Snoqualmie riverside habitat. You'll actually dig in to plant native trees and shrubs along the river and see the fruits of your labor grow. It's a fun weekend activity and learning experience for families, students, clubs, neighbors or anyone who wants to get involved with helping salmon.

The first planting takes place on Saturday, October 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Meet at Tolt-MacDonald Park, just south of downtown Carnation. This project will widen the existing treed areas near the river to control runoff and provide cooling shade and cover for the chinook salmon and other fish that use the river.

The second planting is on Saturday, November 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Chinook Bend. This project will restore and improve habitat along the Snoqualmie River on former Carnation Farm property. The 56-acre property, recently donated by Nestle Corporation, contains prime spawning beds for chinook, pink and chum salmon. Because chinook salmon spawning habitat in the Snoqualmie Watershed is quite limited, protecting and restoring it is an important piece of the salmon recovery challenge.

For either day, bring a shovel if you have one and wear old "work" clothes and rubber boots or heavy shoes. Tools will be provided, if needed. The planting will take place regardless of rain, so dress appropriately for the weather. Light refreshments will be provided -- bring a coffee mug if you have one.

To reserve a space, get directions, or for more information on this or other volunteer opportunities, please call Bob Spencer, King County Department of Natural Resources, at 206-296-1951 or e-mail bob.spencer@kingcounty.gov. A parent or guardian must accompany volunteers under 16. Reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities will be provided upon request. TTY: 1-800-833-6388.
