News Release
Sewer expansion work means Renton lane closures

Southwest 43rd Street, 80th Avenue South and Oaksdale Avenue Southwest affected

Beginning Monday, November 27th, work crews will be installing a major King County sewer line connection at the intersection of Southwest 43rd Street, 80th Avenue South and Oaksdale Avenue Southwest in Renton. Work to place the nine-foot diameter pipe underground will take approximately 18 days and be completed about Friday, December 15th.

Crews will work a combination of weekdays, nights and weekends to complete the intersection crossing. Police will be hired to direct traffic during the first few days of construction. Approximately 400 businesses were sent notices of possible traffic disruption.

The center left turn lane near the intersection at Southwest 43rd will be closed throughout the work and detours will be in place.

Weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and also throughout the weekend of December 2nd - 3rd, four lanes of traffic - two lanes in each direction, will remain open.

During night work from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m., Monday - Friday, and during the weekend of December 9th-10th (24 hours Saturday and Sunday), east and west traffic on Southwest 43rd will be reduced to two lanes - one lane in each direction.

80th Avenue South traffic will be detoured to East Valley Road and 80th Place South, Oaksdale traffic to Lind Avenue Southwest and Southwest 41st Avenue.

Work at the intersection will involve cutting an open trench, north and south, across Southwest 43rd from 80th Avenue South to Oaksdale to complete connection to a 108-inch diameter sewer pipe. Weekdays and weekends, the trench will be covered with metal plates to accommodate east-west travel on Southwest 43rd.

The work is part of the two-year, three-mile South Interceptor project, which will significantly increase wastewater capacity for south King County and accommodate recent and forecasted growth in the area.
