King County launches new online resource for manufacturers using recycled materials

King County has launched a new resource called DataLink, a one-stop, customized database that connects manufacturers with business resources throughout the Puget Sound area.

Created by the King County Commission for Marketing Recyclable Materials as part of the LinkUp program, DataLink teams up with more than 100 banks, chambers of commerce, government agencies and environmental groups to provide information on resources and services to help create new markets for recyclable materials.

DataLink's online format allows the user to find solutions to specific business needs 24 hours a day. The database brings together a wealth of resources in an easily searchable format -- from funding sources and tax incentives to job training, site selection and fast-track permitting. Contact names, phone numbers and links to related Web sites are also included.

Businesses can use DataLink to search for business assistance resources in several local counties as well as statewide. They can also search for specific types of business incentive providers. Traditionally, a business owner would have to search a wide variety of sources to get the kind of information that DataLink provides in minutes - and all on one Web site.

In the past, King County focused its marketing efforts on getting consumers and businesses to buy recycled products. LinkUp takes this one step further, by partnering with businesses to use more recycled materials in the products they make.

"DataLink gives these innovative companies quick, easy-to-access information on a variety of economic development tools and incentives," says Erv Sandlin, LinkUp program manager. "This information is critical if we want to create strong, viable markets for recyclable materials."

King County's LinkUp program, which began in April 2000, provides free technical expertise and marketing support to manufacturers that use recycled materials in their products. Currently, LinkUp is seeking additional manufacturers and entrepreneurs to apply for participation in the program.

Businesses interested in learning more about DataLink and the LinkUp program should contact Sandlin at (206) 296-0233. To use DataLink, visit http://www.metrokc.gov/dnrp/swd/linkup/.
