King County to sponsor March 21 workshop

As a part of the Green Building movement underway in the Puget Sound region, King County is working to assure that contractors use environmentally-friendly building practices and incorporate recycled materials into highway and road-building projects whenever possible.

The County will conduct a half-day workshop to explore "Building Roads with Recycled Materials" from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, in the 8th floor conference room of the King Street Center (201 S Jackson Street, Seattle). King County's Environmental Purchasing Program and LinkUp, a King County program that works with manufacturers and construction businesses to use more recycled materials are sponsoring the event.

The workshop will bring together several top experts in the field, including:

  • Dr. Taylor Eighmy, Director of the University of New Hampshire's Recycled Materials Resource Center, a nationally recognized research facility studying the long-term impacts of recycled materials in highway construction.
  • Gregory Ranft, an engineer from the Texas Department of Transportation, the agency has used recycled materials for roadway construction for many years
  • Shari Schaftlein, deputy director of environmental services and Tom Baker, state materials engineer. Both are with the Washington State Department of Transportation.

A behind-the-scenes tour of Renton Concrete Recyclers, the newest partner in the LinkUp program will be offered from 2 to 3 p.m.

King County's LinkUp program, now entering its third year, uses a team of experts to provide eligible businesses with free technical and promotional support.

Those interested in the event should call (206) 281-9021 for a schedule and directions. Businesses wanting more information about LinkUp should contact Erv Sandlin at 206-296-0233 or Erv.sandlin@kingcounty.gov.
