News Release King County is looking for a few good manufacturers to participate in the LinkUp program. LinkUp, sponsored by the King County Solid Waste Division, provides customized technical and marketing expertise at no cost to eligible manufacturers that use recycled materials in their products. The program expands the use and market for products made with recycled materials, which ultimately conserves precious natural resources and protects the environment. Preference will be given to manufacturers using one of four recycled materials: mixed glass, urban wood, mixed paper or food waste. However, companies that incorporate other recycled materials in their manufacturing processes or do not presently use recycled materials but are interested in starting are encouraged to apply as well. LinkUp is an outgrowth of King County's recycling program, long recognized as one of the best in the country. In the past, the County focused its efforts on getting residents and businesses to recycle and buy recycled products. LinkUp takes this one step further, by partnering with manufacturers to use more recycled materials in the products they make. The program is sponsored by King County, but LinkUp has worked with manufacturers in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties during the last year. LinkUp helps companies:
"Markets for recycled materials extend beyond King County's borders," says Erv Sandlin, LinkUp program manager. "If we were to concentrate on only one small geographic area, we would not reach our full potential. By involving manufacturers throughout Puget Sound, we can develop markets that are truly regional with a much greater capacity for recycled materials." Now entering its third year, the LinkUp program boasts a solid track record. A survey of LinkUp partners conducted in 2001 found the companies experienced increased sales, improved customer awareness and heightened product visibility as a result of their program participation.
