News Release
King County invites public comment on improvements planned for First Northeast Solid Waste Transfer Station in Shoreline

King County wants to hear from residents about planned renovations to the First Northeast Transfer Station in Shoreline. Residents can learn about the project and comment on the project at a series of public meetings hosted by the County's Solid Waste Division.

The next meeting will be Thursday, September 26 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Shoreline's Meridian Park Elementary School, 17077 Meridian Ave. N. At the meeting, county staff will summarize the comments from the first meeting in June and discuss how those ideas were incorporated into the plans for the renovation of the station. Then, the public will have the chance to provide comment on this information.

"Renovations are needed because the existing 35-year old facility is technologically obsolete," said Solid Waste Division Manager Rod Hansen. "Our goal is to provide efficient, comprehensive solid waste services for the existing service area while protecting the environment and being responsive to our neighbors, community and customers."

The proposed improvements to the transfer station include:

  • installing modern compaction equipment to make transporting waste more economical and efficient;
  • enclosing the building were the garbage is unloaded;
  • enhancing environmental protections;
  • expanding recycling opportunities;
  • a new site layout that will reduce the impact on the neighbors and area traffic flow and
  • seismic upgrades.

The public meetings are a part of the first step in the renovation process - updating the First Northeast Transfer Station Facility Master Plan. This Plan will guide the facility development, identify needed improvements and will consider public comments and the County's operational needs. The County Council must review and adopt the final Facility Master Plan and the City of Shoreline must issue land use and building permits before the station renovation can occur.

In addition to the public meetings, a citizens advisory committee is involved in the project planning. A diverse group of volunteers from community and neighborhood groups, waste management companies, schools, environmental groups, local business and government comprise the committee.
