News Release W.G.Clark Construction Company is the newest member of King County's Construction Works program, which provides free assistance and recognition to builders who recycle, reduce waste and use recycled-content building materials. Construction Works helps builders realize the economic and environmental benefits of recycling and using products with recycled-content. Builders who recycle and reduce jobsite waste have reported some dramatic savings. One contractor at a Tukwila construction site recycled 97 percent of the jobsite debris, saving $90,000 in hauling and other disposal fees. W.G.Clark was recognized for its work as the general contractor on King County's new Regional Communications and Emergency Coordination Center, located in Renton. When the 34,000-plus square foot building opens next year, it will handle 911 emergency calls from King County residents and house the Office of Emergency Management which coordinates emergency services during earthquakes, floods and other emergencies. This project is King County's first LEEDTM registered building. LEEDTM is a green building certification or rating system for residential and commercial construction. To qualify for membership in Construction Works, W.G.Clark had to fulfill certain recycling and waste-reduction criteria. For example, the company certified that it recycles 75 percent of its jobsite waste, with an emphasis on concrete, drywall, metals, wood, plastic film and cardboard. This practice will save the company approximately 20 percent in hauling and disposal fees. The company also implemented six waste prevention strategies, such as using excavated dirt as backfill and salvaged metal as reinforcing steel as well as conducting several educational activities. For example, W.G.Clark issued a letter this past spring advising subcontractors and suppliers working on the Regional Communications and Emergency Coordination Center of its waste-reduction and recycling strategies and provided tips on how they can better comply. W.G.Clark Construction Company, based in Seattle, was founded in 1910 and continues as a third-generation family-owned business. Most of its construction projects are located in Washington state. Construction Works is co-sponsored by the King County Solid Waste Division and the Business and Industry Resource Venture, a program of the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce and Seattle Public Utilities. Companies who become Construction Works members receive a range of benefits which include: media and public recognition; customized technical assistance to set up or increase jobsite recycling and waste reduction programs; hardhat decals for their crews and a jobsite banner.
