Kids around the nation celebrate
afterschool activities

Kids are invited to join the West Hill Community Center in Renton and the White Center Park Teen Program in a national afterschool celebration - Lights On Afterschool - Thursday, October 10, to recognize the importance of afterschool programs.

Thousands of participating sites across the country will celebrate the importance of quality afterschool programs in the lives of children, families and communities, said King County Recreational Specialist, Kathy Nygard.

"Afterschool programs play a key role by providing a safe place for kids, offering enrichment activities, helping working families and improving academic achievement," she said.

West Hill Community Center will host JahBreeze, an interactive drumming performance and workshop from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Youth and teens will have the opportunity to try their hand on African drums.

The White Center Park Teen Program will host an hour-long interactive performance and workshop by Christopher DeLaurenti at the Log Cabin, from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. DeLaurenti blends and manipulates musical snippets and fragments into unique digital music improvisation.

Lights On Afterschool was inaugurated in 2000 by the Afterschool Alliance, a nonprofit public awareness and advocacy organization. For more information, visit www.afterschoolalliance.org.
