News Release King County's Wastewater Treatment Division has rescheduled construction improvements for the aging Vashon Island Treatment Plant. The work had been planned for this year's construction season but will begin in April 2004 following an environmental review and permitting process. King County has completed the preliminary design for improving the treatment plant. With this plan, the plant and its marine outfall will be upgraded to protect public health and water quality. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and state Department of Ecology are conducting the environmental process under the National Environmental Policy Act, or NEPA. That process, which began in early 2002, is expected to be completed soon. Completion of NEPA will allow King County to complete the permitting process later this year. During last year's public review process for the plant improvements, Vashon residents viewed illustrations of the proposed plant structures, site and landscaping. King County representatives took public comments on the proposed architectural and landscape design. The King County Arts Commission has also been conducting a public involvement process on Vashon for developing public art funded by the plant improvement project. For more information about the project, call John Komorita, King County project manager, at (206) 263-6522. King County assumed ownership and operation of the Vashon plant in November 1999 at the request of the Vashon Sewer District. The sewer district owns and operates the sewer system that collects sewage and conveys it to the plant. King County's Wastewater Treatment Division protects public health and water quality by serving 18 cities, 15 sewer districts and more than 1.4 million residents in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties.
