News Release
Three public seminars this summer on science, engineering for Brightwater treatment facilities

At three public seminars this summer, scientists, engineers and other experts will present technical information about Brightwater wastewater treatment facilities for south Snohomish County and north King County. The Saturday seminars are June 7 in Shoreline and July 19 and Aug. 16 in Bothell.

Since writing the draft environmental impact statement for Brightwater last year, staff and consultants for the regional utility operated by King County have been conducting additional scientific studies and analyses. They will share new information in areas of concern often noted in comments on the draft EIS for the project.

The public will have a chance to comment on the new information before a final decision is made in December about siting Brightwater facilities. The final EIS will be released in November.

Brightwater must be running by 2010 to serve the rapidly growing population in north King County and south Snohomish County. King County's wastewater treatment utility has been protecting public health and water quality in the Brightwater service area for nearly 40 years.

Beginning May 30, people can review new technical reports on the Web and at local libraries -- or people can call the Brightwater project to request printed copies of the reports or compact discs containing the reports.

At the technical seminars, participants can ask questions about the technical presentations. They can stay the full day or attend selected seminars and visit the open house. Professional child care and a light lunch will be provided.

Participants also can comment on the technical information. Comments can be made orally at the seminars or submitted in writing. Each technical seminar will take place during a 30-day comment period for the technical reports.

The technical seminars go beyond legal requirements of the EIS process. The Brightwater project team will consider the comments when preparing the final EIS although each comment will not get a specific response in the final EIS.
