June 23, 2003 2003 Archived News News Release The upcoming King County Fair in Enumclaw will bring a heap of country living to downtown Seattle, July 9-10, as Cowpie Bingo mosies its way into Westlake Park. The two-day event is designed to give city folks a sample of the country fun to be found at the 141st annual King County Fair, the longest running old fashioned fair west of the Mississippi. The bovine spectacle will involve a King County cow turned loose in a large fenced-off area, or "game board," that is marked off in 2-foot by 2-foot squares. Cowpie Bingo winners are determined when the resplendent, cud-chewing Holstein makes a fresh "deposit" on the lucky square. Participants can make a donation to reserve a square -- $10 for all three hours, or $5 per hour -- with gift certificates going to the winners. Evening Magazine host John Curley will emcee the event, which will graze from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. The King County Fair, scheduled July 16-20 in Enumclaw, has a "little" something for everyone. In fact it's the passel of fun little things that makes this true, old-fashioned country fair so special, and why fair organizers have chosen "Little things are big at the King County Fair" as the 2003 theme. Founded in 1862, the King County Fair is the oldest traditional country fair west of the Mississippi. Fairgoers will enjoy summer concerts, baby animals, a logger competition, carnival rides, a professional rodeo, farm displays, fresh hot scones, and much more. The fair kicks off with the highly popular Critter Crowning, set for High Noon July 16 at the Fairgrounds. Finalists are chosen from photographs submitted by King County residents of themselves and their favorite pet or farm animal. They compete in person at the Critter Crowning for the chance to serve as the official mascot for the 2003 King County Fair. Last year's winner was a Nubian goat named Dulce de Leche. Applications for the contest are available at King County Parks facilities everywhere. For more information or to receive an application by mail, please call the King County Fairgrounds at 206-296-8888. Entries must be post-marked by June 27. Check the fair schedule for special discounts, such as free admission on Friday (10 a.m. to noon) for those dressed as a pickle. General admission to the fair is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors (62+), and $4 for children (6-15 years). There is no charge for kids age 5 and under. Cost includes admission to the popular Loggers Competition. Parking for the fair is $5.
