News Release
Local agencies studying cause of small sewer leak in east Kent

King County and the Soos Creek Sewer District are working to determine the cause of a small leak of wastewater Thursday through a manhole cover in a fairway of the Lake Meridian Golf and Country Club.

Club workers noted the leak about 9:15 a.m., roped off the area and irrigated the area to deter golfers and clean the fairway. Workers for the sewer district and the county's Wastewater Treatment Division stopped the leak about 11:15 a.m.

The leak was from a King County pipeline that's part of the Soos Creek sewer system in east Kent. A Soos Creek sewer line also runs through the area, near 136th Avenue Southeast and Southeast 248th Street. The leak was not near any water bodies.

King County estimated the leak to be less than 1,000 gallons of wastewater. Local and state health and environmental agencies have been notified. The health department has asked the country club to close the affected hole for 24 hours.

King County's wastewater treatment utility protects public health and water quality by serving 18 cities, 15 sewer districts and more than 1.4 million residents in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties. The county's South Treatment Plant in Renton treats about 115 million gallons of wastewater a day.
