Media Advisory
With low tides exposing vulnerable sea life, Naturalists help public enjoy, not harm, beach habitat

Who: Beach Naturalists will be available at area beaches this weekend to help people learn about, enjoy and respect King County’s shorelines. Beach Naturalists are local citizen volunteers who care about Puget Sound beaches and believe the public protects best the places they understand and care about.

What: More than 100 Beach Naturalists are trained to help visitors enjoy the beach without harming it. Children are especially welcome! Naturalists can tell you what sea stars eat, why barnacles stand on their heads, how moon snails lay their eggs, and how a simple action like picking up a rock can destroy an animal’s home.

When: Beach Naturalists are at beaches on summer low tide weekends for four hours each day. Naturalists will be on hand Saturday, July 12 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m., -3.2 tide, and Sunday, July 13 (10 a.m. to 2 p.m., -3.4 tide). Only two more low tide Beach Naturalist days remain after this weekend -- July 27 (10-2), and August 10 (10-2).

Where: On those dates, look for Beach Naturalists at Richmond Beach, Carkeek Park, Golden Gardens, Constellation Park (Alki Point), Lincoln Park, Seahurst Park in Burien, and Des Moines Beach Park. They are wearing khaki vests and crab-emblazoned hats.

Partners: King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks, The Seattle Aquarium, Forum for WRIA 9, King Conservation District, Seattle Department of Parks & Recreation, Washington Sea Grant, Puget Sound Water Quality Action Team, People For Puget Sound, Seattle/King County Department of Public Health, state Department of Fish & Wildlife and state Department of Health.
