Jeffrey the Sheep crowned King County Fair's Royal Critter

King County Executive Ron Sims crowns Jeffrey the sheep as Royal Critter with owner Samantha McBride Animals from throughout King County put on their Wednesday best to compete for the Royal Critter Crown at today's official opening of the King County Fair. A guinea pig wearing a cowboy hat, a horse with a glistening coat and a pigeon atop his owner's head were among those vying to be crowned the official 2003 fair mascot.

It was four-month-old Jeffrey the Sheep who edged 13 worthy animals vying for honors Wednesday as the King County Fair's Royal Critter in Enumclaw.

King County Executive Ron Sims congratulated the regal sheep who was selected as the fair's official mascot during opening ceremonies under sunny skies at the King County Fairgrounds. "I want to emphasize that every young person here is a winner," said Sims. "All of the owners should be congratulated for the care and responsibility they have demonstrated tending to these animals who are all great." The oldest fair west of the Mississippi continues through Sunday, July 20.

"I feel really good and I hope Jeffrey feels the same way," said Jeffrey's owner Samantha McBride of Hobart who cares for Jeffrey. Jeffrey lives with Samantha and her family in their house and though Samantha's father is not thrilled with the arrangement, it became necessary when Jeffrey's mother demonstrated aggression toward him. "Maybe this will ease the pain of Jeffrey living in the house for another two months," McBride added.

The Royal Critter runner-up was Lenard, a guinea pig owned by Avery Anderson from Enumclaw and third place went to Frankie the rabbit owned by Sarah Cleavenger of Renton. Other critter contestants included two cats, a cow, pigeon, chicken, horse, and twin goats. Jeffrey the Sheep replaces the 2002 winner, Dulce de Leche, a Nubian goat, as the animal that best embodies the spirit of the King County Fair.

King County Councilmembers Steve Hammond, Carolyn Edmonds and Pete von Reichbauer and Enumclaw Mayor John Wise served as judges for the contest.

The King County Fair is one of the last real country fairs; in fact it's the passel of fun little things that makes this old-fashioned country fair so special. Fairgoers will enjoy summer concerts, baby animals, a loggers' competition, carnival rides, a professional rodeo, farm displays, fresh hot scones, and much more. Along with the traditional fair entertainment, the 2003 Fair will include top musical entertainment such as Jo Dee Messina, Sawyer Brown and Terri Clark.
