July 17, 2003 2003 Archived News News Release Getting "in a pickle" is a good thing Friday at the King County Fair in Enumclaw. Fairgoers dressed as a pickle receive free admission to the 141st annual King County Fair on Friday, July 18, between 10 a.m. and noon. Not only does the winner preside as the Fair's 2003 King Pickle, but will receive the coveted jar of Farman's pickles and a King County Fair Treasure Chest. The King County Fair, which continues through Sunday, July 20, is one of the last real country fairs, featuring an old-fashioned grass-under-your-feet fair atmosphere and traditional fair entertainment, carnival rides, agricultural displays and fair food. Two of the Fair's most popular events - the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association Rodeo and the Logger Competition - are still to come. The rodeo begins at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and the Logger Competition begins at 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. There is no additional cost for the Logger Competition, but admission to the rodeo is an additional $5 for adults and $3 for kids 6 to 15 (kids 5 and under are free). Along with a professional rodeo and a logger's competition, the 2003 Fair includes top musical entertainment such as Friday night's country superstar, Jo Dee Messina, (8 p.m. on the KeyBank Main Stage, $35 at the gate). A free concert with popular Seattle cover band The Beatniks, is set for 8 p.m. Saturday, and the concerts will wrap up with a bang when country music star Terri Clark takes the main stage at 6 p.m. Sunday ($20 at the gate). Another fun event scheduled Saturday at noon at the Family Stage is the "Cow Calling" Contest. All are invited to belt out your best "moo," with the chance to earn valuable gift certificates. Winners are determined by audience -- and cow -- reaction. Admission to the King County Fair is $8 for adults; $4 for kids ages 6 to 15; $6 for seniors 62 and up; and free for kids under 6. Farman's Pickle Company was an Enumclaw fixture and remains a long-time sponsor of the King County Fair. Brothers Dick and Fred Farman started the company as a small 10-acre Enumclaw cucumber farm and pickling operation in 1944 and grew it into a popular brand as "The King Pickle" in 13 western states.
