News Release Wondering what you can do to help preserve our environment? You can start in your own kitchen and backyard. Sign up for King County’s Master Recycler Composter program and learn how to protect the environment by reducing the amount of garbage generated and recycling whenever possible. In return for the training, program participants share their knowledge and skills with others by volunteering at least 40 hours in the community. Participants in the seven-week program receive approximately 40 hours of tuition-free training about waste prevention, recycling, home composting and alternatives to household hazardous waste. Since the program began in 1990, 483 people have received Master Recycler Composter training. They have gone on to volunteer nearly 15,000 hours, giving classroom presentations, staffing booths at community events and teaching others about composting. Participants have volunteered for more than 2,000 programs and events. The next annual MRC training will be held at the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery, located at 125 West Sunset Way in Issaquah, on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 9 p.m., September 9 through October 21, 2003. In addition, five Saturday sessions are part of the training: September 13, September 20, September 27, October 11, and October 18. The Saturday sessions will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The training is free and open to all King County residents outside of the City of Seattle. In return for the training, program graduates volunteer 40 hours of community outreach. Applications for the program are due Monday, September 1, 2003. Individuals who live in King County, outside the City of Seattle, are eligible to apply. People with disabilities are encouraged to apply the training site is wheelchair accessible and reasonable accommodations are available upon request. Please provide two weeks notice prior to the training if a sign language interpreter is needed. The course is free in return for the volunteering.
