News Release Responding to public requests, King County is providing an opportunity for individuals to request a two-week extension in commenting on the scope of the environmental impact statement for proposed Carnation wastewater treatment facilities. The deadline for commenting on the scope of the document is Aug. 30. Individuals requesting an extension by Sept. 3 will have until Sept. 12 to comment. Written comments and requests can be submitted through an e-mail message, letter, fax, or form on the King County Web site. King County will use comments received during the scoping process to help write the environmental impact statement, or EIS. People can comment on the project alternatives, potential impacts and possible mitigation measures the county should evaluate in the EIS. The City of Carnation has contracted with King County to design, build and operate a new wastewater treatment system. The city has decided that replacing individual septic tanks with a wastewater treatment plant is an important step toward the long-term viability of Carnation. The new treatment system will protect public health and water quality. So far, the county and city have identified two alternative treatment plant sites, two alternative discharge locations (either a river outfall or infiltration to the ground through upland discharge) and pipeline routes between the alternative plant sites and discharge locations. To comment on the scope of the EIS -- or to request an extension -- send an e-mail message to carnationwwtp@kingcounty.gov; fax to 206-684-1278; or letter or postcard to the following address: Environmental Planning, KSC-NR-0505 King County Wastewater Treatment Division 201 South Jackson Street, Seattle, WA 98104-3855. Comments and requests can also be submitted through an online form at the project Web site: http://dnr.metrokc.gov/WTD/carnation/. Comments are due by Aug. 30. Requests for extensions to Sept. 12 are due by Sept. 3. All comments and requests must include the writer's name and address.
