News Release
Proposals wanted: King County Parks invites public-private venture ideas

If you've got ideas for innovative concepts that can enhance services and generate revenue for parks and pools – and, of course, your business - King County wants to hear from you.

For the second straight year, King County Parks is distributing nationwide a formal Request for Ideas and Proposals (RFI&P). Any for-profit, non-profit, group or individual is eligible to submit a venture proposal.

"Productive partnerships, entrepreneurial ideas and enhancing the public's park experience are the foundation for Parks' new way of doing business," said King County Executive Ron Sims. "We want to hear from individuals and organizations with innovative ideas, even if the individual is unable to implement it personally. If the proposal is sound, we will invest and make it happen."

Among partners King County is courting are food and beverage concessionaires interested in operating at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Marymoor Park in Redmond, Cottage Lake Park in Woodinville, Five Mile Lake Park in Federal Way, and other park sites.

King County will also entertain proposals from vendor partners in outdoor recreation, special events, festivals and concerts, and sports tournaments. Opportunities for developing park amenities may include restaurants, hotels/motels, batting cages, water play features, indoor family play centers, retail stores and a host of other park improvements.

The Parks Division is also accepting proposals for advertising, sponsorship naming rights and special promotions opportunities. Advertising opportunities may be available on buildings, trash and recycling receptacles, park benches, scoreboards, dugouts, backstops, and fences. Sponsorship opportunities could include regional special events, tournaments, and competitions. King County Parks is also interested in discussing proposals for naming rights to specific parks, pools, fields, buildings and more.

In 2002, the King County Parks Division began seeking new ways of doing business and working with partners to make them happen. As part of that, entrepreneurial ventures have played a greater role in supporting King County parks and pools

King County expects to enter into contracts with numerous persons who respond to the RFI&P. Proposals are due by November 25, 2003.

The criteria King County will use to select proposals include the following:

  • Projected revenue or other benefits to King County.
  • Compatibility with the character of the individual park(s).
  • · Feasibility and timing of implementation, including any capital and/or permit issues.
  • Experience and demonstrated success of respondents.

For a copy of the RFI&P, which contains information on submitting a proposal, please visit the County's Procurement Web site or contact Roy Dodman, 206-263-4266.
