News Release
Community meeting Dec. 4 on plans for Carnation wastewater treatment facilities

Advanced wastewater treatment and alternatives for discharging treated wastewater are two of the topics to be discussed at a community meeting Thursday, Dec. 4, on the proposed Carnation wastewater treatment facilities.

The meeting is scheduled for 6:30-9 p.m. at Tolt Middle School, Multipurpose Room, 4950 Tolt Ave., Carnation. Leading the presentations will be staff and consultants for the King County Wastewater Treatment Division and City of Carnation.

Meeting topics include the following:

  • how public comments led to a change in the location of the proposed river discharge alternative and a new wetland-enhancement discharge alternative
  • more information on all the discharge alternatives and how they will be evaluated
  • a presentation on advanced treatment, how technology planned for this plant works, and how clean it'll make the water
  • time for public comment, questions and answers.

Carnation contracted with King County in 2002 to design, build, operate and maintain wastewater treatment facilities for both environmental and economic reasons. The city plans to build and operate the local sewage collection system.

King County is now drafting an environmental impact statement for the project and plans to release it in early 2004 for public comment. Comments on the draft EIS will be addressed in the final EIS, scheduled for release next summer. The City of Carnation and County Executive will then select the final treatment plant site and discharge alternative.

Design and permitting is scheduled for 2004-2005. Construction is scheduled for 2005-2007.

For information on the treatment plant, contact King County's Carnation Wastewater Treatment Plant Project Information Line at 206-263-5212 or toll-free at 1-800-325-6165, ext. 35212. Or send an e-mail message, or check the project Web site.

For information on the local sewage-collection system, contact Carnation City Manager Bill Brandon at 425-333-4192, or visit the city's Web site.

King County's Wastewater Treatment Division protects public health and water quality by serving 18 cities, 15 sewer districts and more than 1.4 million residents in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties. The regional wastewater treatment utility now operated by King County has been preventing water pollution for nearly 40 years.
