News Release
Community meeting Dec. 11 on plans to replace Juanita Bay Pump Station

Staff from King County's Wastewater Treatment Division will describe plans for replacing an aging wastewater pump station on Juanita Drive Northeast at a community meeting Thursday, Dec. 11.

The meeting, at Juanita Community Church, 10007 N.E. 132nd St., Kirkland, is scheduled to run from 6:30-8:30 p.m. with a presentation at 7 p.m. People attending the meeting can see the proposed design and site plan, express their ideas and concerns, and get answers to their questions.

To protect public health and water quality, the county must replace its Juanita Bay Pump Station at 9290 Juanita Drive N.E. The new station will ensure safe and reliable operation and increase pumping capacity from 14.2 million gallons a day to 30.6 mgd.

The existing pump station site is too small, so the county plans to build the new pump station across 93rd Avenue Northeast. That property now contains a King County parks maintenance building. Construction is expected to run from late 2004 through 2006.

Built in late 1960s, the existing station serves 7,650 acres in north Kirkland and part of the Northshore Utility District. It pumps wastewater east through two pipes to the main conveyance pipe that follows the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway to the county's South Treatment Plant in Renton.

King County's Wastewater Treatment Division protects public health and water quality by serving 18 cities, 15 sewer districts and more than 1.4 million residents in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties. The regional wastewater treatment utility now operated by King County has been preventing water pollution for nearly 40 years.
