King County offers free workshops in natural, low-maintenance landscaping
Residents can learn how to create a low-maintenance landscape that
is healthier for both people and wildlife at one of King County's free
"naturescaping" workshops.
These free workshops
offer a wealth of tips on landscaping for wildlife, and affordable,
landscaping techniques that are specific for the northwest.
Participants also learn how to shrink lawns and reduce the amount of
time and energy spent on yard work.
Speakers include
Russell Link, author of "Landscaping for Wildlife in the Pacific
Northwest," and Greg Rabourn, co-host of KCTV's gardening show, "Yard
Talk." Sasha Shaw from the King County's Noxious Weed Program, and
Cindy Young, from the King County Native Plant Salvage Program, will
show demonstrate how to control weeds and suggest some choice native
plants.
"Our workshops provide the perfect
opportunity for participants to expand their knowledge about
sustainable landscaping methods," said Rabourn, a King County community
stewardship specialist. "Of course, the opportunity to dig up free
plants is a great way to get started shrinking that lawn."
Workshops are set for 6:30- 9 p.m. at the following locations:
Tuesday, March 25, Northshore Utility District, 6830 NE 185th St., Kenmore;
Thursday, March 27, Land Trust Building, 10014 Bank Road SW, Vashon. Vashon workshop is also sponsored by Vashon Maury Island Land Trust
Workshop
participants will have an opportunity to attend a native plant salvage
event to remove native plants for their own naturescaping projects from
a site that's slated for development. These plant salvage events will
take place Saturday, March 29 in Redmond and Sunday, March 30
on Vashon Island. Driving directions will be provided at the workshop.
