Forests for habitat -

Clockwise starting at top left: Pileated woodpecker, Snag, Black bear with dinner, Northern goshawk, Cougar family,Flying squirrel
- We are dealing with an increasing number of endangered species - it is much more cost effective to work at maintaining sustainable habitat before species are listed rather than the cumbersome and costly process of trying to recover species’ viability.
- Lowland forests provide more productive and protective habitat for many species than the higher elevation forests. For instance deer, elk and many other of the larger mammals move down to the lower elevation forests during the winter seeking more available food sources and thermal protection. There is a greater diversity of species in the lowland, primarily second growth, forests than in any other habitat in KC.
