2000 Hylebos Creek Salmon Survey

In 2000 the Friends of the Hylebos Wetlands partnered with King County on their Fourth Annual Salmon Watcher Program. The purpose of this program is to expand local agencies’ knowledge of the distribution of spawning salmon in the Puget Sound area and to actively engage the public in doing something helpful for the streams in their watershed. Volunteers were trained in salmon identification by a King County Fisheries Biologist in September, and were then asked to observe for fish in the creek from stationary locations at banks or bridges for at least a 15-minute interval twice a week from October through December. Most volunteers went beyond the 15-minute request and in total spent almost 100 hours watching for fish. Volunteers spotted over 200 fish consisting of 12 Chinook, 128 Coho, 7 Chum, 28 unidentified fish, 21 carcasses and 12 trout.
