Slide 38 of 43 We put this beaver photo in here as a reminder that beavers and salmon co-evolved. Beavers were once ubiquitous but were trapped out heavily during the past century. They are beginning to make a come-back. And as beavers increase in numbers, the effects of their dam building is more commonly observed. Sometimes their dams cause flooding, which may become a problem for local residents. But many times, the ponds formed from their dams become excellent habitat for juvenile salmonids and many other plant and animal species. Because beavers and salmon evolved together, salmon are often able to scale beaver dams.
