Why was Matthews Beach Closed?
The most likely source of bacteria that resulted in the closure of Matthews Beach was the high counts of bacteria that enter Lake Washington from Thornton Creek. Thornton Creek is currently being evaluated to identify and control the chronically high bacteria in this stream. The bacteria counts at Matthew Beach are typically highest at the south end of the beach adjacent to the mouth of Thornton Creek and lowest at the north end, farthest from the stream. When it rains flows from Thornton Creek increase the bacteria counts at Matthews Beach (sometimes there is a one to two day time lag).
Why was Matthews Beach Re-opened?
After a period of time the flushing action of the lake decreases the bacteria in the swimming area. The bacteria counts at Matthews Beach are currently very low and the beach is open for swimming.
