The
Peterson Lake Park Natural Area is located near Maple Valley, WA
in the middle of the Peterson Creek basin. King County acquired
the 153-acre Natural Area in its Waterways 2000 Program, to help
preserve water and habitat quality in the Cedar River Watershed.
Peterson Lake Natural Area contains coniferous and deciduous forest,
open water, scrub-shrub and forested wetlands, and several year-round
and seasonal tributaries. The wetland system at Peterson Lake is
rated as Class 1 for its size, diversity of vegetation, open water
component, and presence of Labrador Tea. The wetlands and the upland
forests provide habitat for resident and migratory birds, terrestrial
and aquatic mammals, fish, amphibians, and reptiles. Downstream
of Peterson Lake, Peterson Creek flows through a corridor of largely
intact forest on privately owned land to the Cedar River.
The site is appropriate for passive recreational use, such as walking
or nature observation. Peterson Lake is located between the cities
of Renton and Maple Valley near the intersection of SE Petrovitsky
Road and 196th Avenue SE. Most parking occurs at this intersection
along Seattle Public Utilities’ SE Pipeline Road directly
above the lake. A small vehicle pullout along 196th Avenue is located
directly across the road from the existing upper forest trail access
point.
