Why is this Subarea Important to Salmon?

The Cedar River mainstem and main fish-bearing tributaries provide the majority of the current spawning habitat for chinook and sockeye salmon and steelhead trout in the WRIA 8 system. This subarea also provides significant spawning and rearing habitat for coho salmon and cutthroat trout.

The Upper Cedar River Subarea is closed to development and commercial timber harvest because it is the source of drinking water for residents of Seattle and many nearby jurisdictions. A new fish ladder being constructed at the Landsburg Diversion Dam will open up 12 miles of relatively undisturbed mainstem habitat to all salmon species except sockeye.
