Duwamish Gardens Acquisition and Restoration in Tukwila Green/Duwamish and Central Puget Sound Watershed Water Resource Inventory Area (WRIA) 9

Project Description

• Located in the Duwamish Estuary Subwatershed
• Project is part of project DUW-7 in the 2005 Salmon Habitat Plan (page 7-90)
• Project would acquire a two-acre parcel with at least 500 feet of river bank just downstream of the East Marginal Way S. bridge
• Subsequent phases will involve design and construction of off-channel habitat that will benefit juvenile threatened chinook salmon and other fish and wildlife

Partners and Funding

• Led by the City of Tukwila
• $311,000 funded by SRFB (seventh round) with the City of Tukwila providing $50,000, the King County Conservation Futures program providing $700,000, and the Aquatic Lands Enhancement Account providing $457,521, and the King Conservation District providing $225,000

Importance for Salmon Site is located in the zone of salt and freshwater mixing that is especially important to juvenile salmon in the watershed Critical transition area for juvenile salmon produced higher in the Green/Duwamish River watershed Opportunity to construct up to two acres of intertidal slough/side channel in the future
