Historical moment for Carnation - The new wastewater treatment system is up and running

Cinco de Mayo is an historic day for the City of Carnation and King County partnership. It is the first day of operations for the city’s new collection system and King County’s new state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant. This new city infrastructure protects public health and the environment, and will allow for renewed economic vitality in Carnation.

Hookups to the system are proceeding in an organized way. If you need information on the hookup schedule, check Carnation’s Web site at http://www.ci.carnation.wa.us/.

Next steps

The influent (incoming wastewater flow) is slowly increasing as more people get hooked in. At design capacity, the plant is expected to treat 480,000 gallons of wastewater a day. The water quality of the plant’s effluent (the treated wastewater leaving the plant) is regularly tested. During this start-up phase, treated water from the plant will be discharged via the river outfall at Carnation Farm Road Bridge. Once start-up is complete, the wetland enhancement at Chinook Bend Natural Area will become the primary discharge location for reclaimed water. The river outfall will remain operational and serve as a backup to the wetland, but only used when maintenance needs or equipment problems prevent the facility from producing reclaimed water. (When the river outfall is in use, the plant still produces highly-treated water that meets or exceeds river discharge standards.)

As with any construction project, there is a “punch list” that needs to be completed at the plant. Now that the plant is operational, these things are being taken care of. Landscaping and installation of a path to Tolt MacDonald Park on the north-side of the property will be completed in by early fall.
