The Business We Do -- 24/7
Creating resources from wastewaterFor more than 40 years, the people who oversee and run King County's wastewater treatment utility have been committed to protecting and improving water quality. Though safe, environmentally responsible wastewater treatment will always be part of our mission, we're finding that we can do even more than we thought possible when we built our first regional treatment plants back in the 1960s. Significant advances in treatment technologies are making it possible for us to move beyond simply treating wastewater. Now it's possible to reclaim and reuse highly treated water that would have once gone to Puget Sound. We can harness gases from the waste treatment process to create natural gas. We're even using waste gases to power a fuel cell to make electricity. Our nutrient rich biosolids are being put to use as a soil amendment for agriculture and forestry. Recycling and reusing these valuable resources will add value to the exceptional wastewater treatment services ratepayers have come to expect. To the Wastewater Treatment Division, success will always mean clean water. As we move into the 21st Century, our success will be increasingly defined by creating resources from the wastewater we treat. The links on this page provide insight into the business we do - from controlling the sources of wastewater to collecting and treating wastewater to reusing its byproducts. It also highlights the way we do business - from increasing our productivity to planning new infrastructure and being a good neighbor during construction on dozens of projects over the next few years.
