Wastewater Treatment Division -- Who We Are

In 1958, King County citizens established a regional wastewater conveyance and treatment system to clean the polluted water of Lake Washington and Puget Sound. More than 40 years later, we have dramatically improved the quality of water bodies in our area. In partnership with other jurisdictions, businesses and individuals, King County continues to protect public health and the environment while creating resources from wastewater that benefit our community.

What the Wastewater Treatment Division Does

King County, Washington, protects water quality and prevents water pollution by providing wastewater treatment to 17 cities and 17 local sewer utilities. The county's Wastewater Treatment Division serves about 1.4 million people, including most urban areas of King County and parts of south Snohomish County and northeast Pierce County.

Division employees plan, design, build, maintain and operate the regional treatment plants, pipelines, pump stations and other related facilities. The major facilities are the West Point Treatment Plant (Discovery Park, Seattle), South Treatment Plant (Renton) and Vashon Treatment Plant (Vashon Island). Currently, we are designing and building two new plants—Brightwater Treatment Plant to be located in Woodinville and the Carnation Treatment Plant for the city of Carnation.

Intern Program

We have a very active summer and year-round internship program. Our internship program provides for a variety of hands-on experiences in a number of engineering and environmental fields. In the past, our undergrad and graduate interns have come from fields of study such as architecture, drafting, engineering (civil, chemical, environmental, industrial, electrical, mechanical), environmental planning/sciences, project management, water and wastewater technology.
