Auburn planning area (including cities of Algona and Pacific)

The Auburn planning area portion of the project involves pipeline improvements in the cities of Auburn, Algona and Pacific. This planning area is fairly densely populated with intermittent areas of rural land. Railroad tracks owned by Burlington Northern, Santa Fe and Union Pacific Railroads are located within the area, as are State Route 167 and Highway 18.

The county operates multiple pipelines that serve this planning area and some of the solutions under consideration would reroute wastewater flow from pipes that are at or near capacity to other existing pipes with available capacity. Another solution is to add new pipelines beside or in place of existing pipelines to add capacity.

An overview of the project area, moving from south to north, is provided below.

Auburn Project Location

Three new pipelines will be built in this area.

  1. Pacific Pump Station Force Main
The first new pipeline will carry wastewater north from the city of Pacific to the city of Auburn. The sewer will run from the county’s new Pacific Pump Station, north through the cities of Pacific and Algona to Auburn, where it will connect to the county’s existing Auburn West Interceptor Sewer. Currently King County is exploring multiple routes for this alternative.
  2. Stuck River Trunk Sewer
The second pipeline improvement will address the M Street Trunk Sewer in east Auburn, which is projected to exceed its capacity by 2010. A new sewer, called the Stuck River Trunk Sewer, will take flow from the south end of the M Street Trunk Sewer and route it west to the Auburn West Interceptor Sewer, which has available capacity.

The current proposed alignment alternative for the Stuck River Trunk Sewer runs west from K Street Southeast along 17th Street Southeast, beneath the BNSF Railway tracks to C Street Southwest, where it then connects to the county’s existing Lakeland Hills Trunk Sewer. Other routes are also being considered.
  3. Increase capacity of Auburn West Interceptor
King County needs to increase the capacity of part of the Auburn West Interceptor between 15th Street Southwest and West Main Street. The existing pipe will be replaced or a second parallel pipe added.
