Kent planning area

The Kent planning area portion of the project involves pipeline improvements in the City of Kent. The county originally considered several pipeline alternatives through portions of downtown Kent to address pipeline capacity issues in the Mill Creek Interceptor. County staff recognized the likelihood of disruptions to traffic and access to businesses and public services downtown associated with those alternatives and sought a less-disruptive solution to the capacity problem.

We looked more closely at the service areas and pipes that need additional capacity. We soon focused on the East Hill area of the city of Kent. We found that the existing Mill Creek Interceptor in downtown Kent would have enough capacity if we construct a short section of new pipe on the Kent East Hill to transfer flows out of the Mill Creek pipeline to another county pipe with available capacity. The new pipe will be located on the Kent East Hill, near Sequoia Middle School, providing necessary capacity while avoiding adverse impacts to downtown Kent.

County staff is working with Kent School District and the city of Kent to determine the best alignment in this area.

We Welcome Your Comments & Ideas

King County is committed to being a good neighbor and welcomes your comments. During the evaluation of pipeline routes, we have been working directly with the City of Kent and Kent School District. A sewer route through downtown Kent was eliminated when city staff pointed out the likelihood of high construction costs and disruptions of traffic and downtown businesses. The county then began working with the Kent School District to develop a less-disruptive and costeffective alternative in the vicinity of Sequoia School.

We will continue to work with local jurisdictions, key stakeholders, and the public to identify potential community and environmental impacts—and ways to minimize them—early in the design process. This work will continue during environmental review, permitting, construction, and long-term operations and maintenance of the facilities.
